Case Study: Client: Maersk Drilling
Client: Maersk Drilling
Date: 20 February 2017 | Project duration: 180 hours
The Maersk invincible is the 4th and final ultra-harsh environment jack up rig for Maersk Drilling and is the one of the biggest in the world, specialised for working and drilling of oil in harsh weather conditions at sea. They operate at depths of up to 150m in these harsh environments.
The XLEs series (of which MI is the 4th) are featured in a new Discovery Channel television series, which shows Maersk’s energy supply chain by following company experts and subcontractors as they design and build the next generation of ships and drilling rigs.
Facilities, such as a cinema for 50 people, computer games room and a fully equipped gym, are just some of the features to help the crew achieve a work/life balance.
The rig arrived on the 19th February on the transport vessel the OHT Hawk, which is a semi-submersible heavy transport vessel. The Hawk is also featured in a television series “Mighty Ships” when she was loading one of the 4 ultra-harsh environment jack up rig destined for Norway.
Logistics Support Services was responsible for the whole logistics arrangements for both the rig and the vessel, from their arrival in Walvis Bay until they sailed the following day.
LSS arranged all the logistics for the rig and the Hawk, consisting of embarking a total of 72 pax and disembarking 82 in just 4.5 hours. In addition, there was a significant cargo operation the previous night which was arranged and delivered on time to the rig. The main stop was crew change and provision and stores supply for their next journey to Stavanger Norway. LSS was responsible for the same operation in 2015 with one of the other rigs in the series of 4, the Maersk Intrepid.
All operations were completed safely and on time, with the assistance of local support from launch companies Namib marine and Servest making the transfers possible.
